Chicken Update

So, I know that I was going to post an update on our chicks once we got our 6th chicken...but that never happened.  Between my busy schedule an my neighbor's busy schedule we never made the trade for the last one.  Also, our oldest gal (Wingo) died over the summer.  She was in good health, but was old and the heat and humidity was intense...and she passed away while we were in NY.  Very sad, but such is life with chickens.  After Wingo passed, we decided to wait until next spring and get 3 more chickens (so we will have 7.)  The older gals were kind not very nice to the chicks when they were young  (Henny is still not nice to Pepper!), but the three chicks are best of buddies.  We are hoping if we bring in three more from the same batch, we will have better behaved/nicer flock.   Our chicks started laying eggs about two weeks ago.  They are not laying every day yet, (we get 2-3 eggs a day), and Henny is pretty consistent at 6 a week.  But the fun news is that one of our chickens is a Double Yoker!  So we have had 3 eggs with double yokes.  The last one I hard boiled for a picture.  It is pretty cool, 1/1000 lay double yokes.

Henny's standard Large egg vs. Double yoke egg.

Double yoke!

Our flock.  White in front Henny, Brown: Chess, White with black tail: Beaker, Black: Pepper
