Chicken Update

Well, here we are in August and our Chicks are all grown up.  Not quite to adult status, but definitely not little chicks anymore.   Unfortunately, it appears we have 2 roosters :-(  Not sure what we are going to do about that.  Andrew has only heard one crowing but he does not do it very often (I heard from a distance once.) So Captain Egger (the one with the bright red walnut looking crest) and Blinkie (the grey Silkie) are the two that we are pretty sure are roosters.  We will have to see if they get along okay or we may have to rehome one of them.  There is a chance that they still will turn out to be hens (basically until they start trying to mate or laying eggs you can't be sure...) so my fingers are crossed that we will be able to keep both of them.  There has been a lot of pecking amongst the girls the past week and I think they are trying to finalize the pecking order now that Goldie and Captain Egger are as big as the big girls.  Unfortunately, Snowball and Blinkie are a Bantam breed meaning that they will never be as big.  Snowball looks like she is going to be the bottom of the chain since she is the smallest female, but Blinkie (the more aggressive one of the boys) seems to protect her some.  All the big girls made it through the summer.  We were a little worried about Henny Penny, our eldest, because she was broody for over a month!  Luckily when it cooled down she started to come back out of the box and the color came back into her comb.  Not sure how many more summers she will have with us, but this one was SO hot...it was brutal to be in the yard all day. Overall, everyone they seem to be settling in nicely to life in the Mansson Backyard.
End of May...Out in the coop in a Crate to transition.
